Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a safe, non-invasive, and painless diagnostic examination that generates detailed, multi-dimensional images of the body’s osseous and soft tissue structures.  MRI does not utilize ionizing radiation (x-rays).  Instead, strong magnetic fields, radiofrequency pulses, and computer technology are employed in MRI to create images of the body using the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance.  MRI is utilized to construct thin sections of virtually any part of the body in a relatively short period of time.  The diagnostic accuracy of MRI requires specialized equipment and radiological expertise.  At LGRA, your MRI examination will be interpreted by a fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologist, body imager, or neuroradiologist.

Litton & Giddings has remained at the forefront of MRI technology.  At Cox Health Systems, high field strength MRI (1.5T & 3.0T) is available on GE & Siemens scanners, which employ some of the most advanced software packages in the country.  Such technology affords greater diagnostic accuracy due to unsurpassed resolution and decreased scan time.  At LGRA, we also offer open MRI which is often better suited for claustrophobic and obese patients.

Areas of the body well suited for examination by MRI include:

  • Abdominal organs
  • Biliary tract (MRCP) Brain
  • Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine
  • Chest wall
  • Face, sinuses, and neck
  • Heart & blood vessels (including MRA)
  • Male and female reproductive organs
  • Musculoskeletal system (bone, joints, and soft tissues)
